Victorian Schoolboy Football
The Victorian Schoolboys Football trials started back in April at a local district level with several St Marys boys initially involved.
Each trial took in a wider region, eventually including metropolitan and country kids. The final training camp was held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
From the large number of players at the camp final sides of 23 in each age group were selected to represent Victoria in Darwin in August.
A big congratulations to two of our members who have made these teams.

Ryan Sturgess: Ryan currently in the under 12’s is in his fifth year at the club and is coming up to his 100th game
Luke Bunker
: Luke is also a long serving St Marys member who has consistently represented the club across the years.
We wish both the boys the best of luck and congratulate them on their efforts.

Tony Giles  – The Heart and Soul of St Marys

For those members who don’t know Tony, he is the always smiling, always hard working member of our canteen staff.
For those of you who do know Tony this won’t come as a surprise, but  I’d just like to remind you of what he voluntarily does around our Footy Club.

Each week Tony marks both Whatmough and Greensborough grounds on his rostered days off.
He also spends time on his Saturday to clean up the general area around the rooms, canteen, paths and also the playing surface to ensure our venue presents in its best possible state each weekend.
Arriving early on a Sunday morning with our great canteen girls, Deb and Marie, Tony then helps to ensure both grounds are set-up ready for play.
At the ground all day doing whatever is needed Tony works in the canteen, then helps with the pack-up and cleaning of the rooms after the final games have been completed usually staying long after the last players have left.

During his day off last Friday and after completing all the line marking for two football grounds, this guy with the massive heart could be seen spreading 5 cubic metres of mulch on the gardens around our social club.
The mulch he organised and had delivered himself and that was only after he had weeded the entire garden beds first!

These are just a few of the many jobs Tony does that go unnoticed.  As a club we are very lucky to have a great member base and its people like Tony that are the heart and soul of the club.
Next time you are at Whatmough and you see Tony, why not go up and introduce yourself and thank him for his efforts…….He won’t like it, but he surely deserves it.

St Marys Senior Club. Round 11

A memorable day last Saturday as the club celebrated the inaugural challenge for the Paul Hopper Cup held between St Marys and Thomastown. Paul, a larger than life member of both the Junior and Senior Club sadly passed away and it’s great to see a commemorative round named in his honour.

The pressure is now on for all the 19’s they move into the second half the season, and with finals now looking fairly likely, the boys will all need to perform at their best. Last week the boys where fairly methodical in the way they tackled Warringal Hawks getting the job done by a percentage building 170 points. This week again they will be tested as they take on Reservoir.

The up and down season for the reserves continues . Hopefully this week they can reverse the result from earlier in the season as Parkside will be full of confidence coming into this week’s game.

The seniors welcomed a couple more U/19‘s up who lead from the front and showed much more seasoned players what is required. Familiar names to the Junior club , Lachy Potter and John Desmond figured prominently.  It obviously was infectious as the whole team lifted for the day, and with both sides going goal for goal all day, it made for one of the most exciting games all year and most befitting of The Paul Hopper Cup. After leading at every change we went into the last with a 3 point lead but in the end the Bears were too strong holding on to a thrilling 4 point victory.
