A bit of a mixed bag today. We had the better of the game in the first quarter but once again we were unable to take our chances and get rewarded on the score board. The second quarter Fitzroy got on top in the centre clearances which allowed them to get quick forward entries and score easily and swiftly. After a few changes to the line-up in the third quarter we once again had by far the better of the game. It was really pleasing to see we didn’t drop our heads at half time and really put them under pressure in the third quarter. But the story of our season has been not being able to convert dominant possession and forward entries into scores and so like the first quarter we got little reward for all our effort and dominance. The last quarter we started to tire a little not surprisingly considering we had no bench because of injuries and conceded some late goals. Although beaten, I was pleased with our effort, endeavour and for two quarters our play. It’s the last week our top age boys have with the club so let make it a good week on the track and go out with a bang against Parkside .

Zerella – welcome back. Good defensive work and pressure. Keep that side of your game up and continue to work on taking on the game when we have possession. Well done.

The first three quarters were really frustrating. We worked really hard but our disposals especially our kicking and our handling of the ball was poor. At three quarter time we were looking down the barrel of a loss and taking away a little of the shine of a brilliant day. But what happened in the last quarter was simple awesome – the highlight of the season. To kick 6 goals against the wind and totally dominate was amazing. Huge credit to everyone in the team. Everyone did their bit to lift. Special credit to our top age boys who lead the way and just would except defeat. Even though we have had some disappointments this season we can always remember this day and be proud that on the day the club started a new Colts tradition we not only won the game but won it in the style we did.

As I said after the game, I was really pleased with our effort and commitment to the contest. Being 3 goals down at ¾ time and conceding the first goal of the last quarter – it would have been easy to drop our heads and concede the game. But to your credit you kept going. Unfortunately what cost us victory today is what has cost us all season – a slow start and poor skills. So even though we have a bye this week, get to training so we can continue to work on our game and see if we can get a couple of more wins for the remainder of the season.

A really good performance today in extremely difficult conditions. There were a number of things which were pleasing. 1. Team effort – yes we did have some boys who played well for the majority of the day but everyone made a telling contribution. This needs to continue if we want to get a few more wins this year 2. We continued to battle hard despite the conditions. The third quarter was really difficult with the rain belting down but the second quarter was also as we were kicking against a fairly stiff breeze. The fact we only conceded one goal and also scored one goal was a super effort. In previous games this season its been in these quarters where we have come undone so to hang tuff and kicked a goal against the run of play late in the quarter was great. 3. Work rate was excellent. We continued to run and work hard. 4. Game plan. We started to really see the benefits of the training we have been doing the last few weeks. No U-turns. Forward press worked really well. Didn’t bomb into packs into the forward line as much. Yes we did muck up a couple of short switches probably due to the wet conditions but we scored a few times because of it. The one bit of play where Greeny kicked to Powelly who chipped to Joey – who then centred to Vakanis – who then chipped to Barks in front for a goal is exactly what we need to keep doing. I understand we beat a team who have also been struggling a bit this year but the fact we stuck to trying to implement our game style and continued to work really hard should not be downplayed. We all know when we play to our style we can more than match any team in the division. We have shown this continuously throughout the year. But what we did today which was different was do it for the majority of the game instead of patches. So our challenge for the remainder of the season is too much our effort, attitude and desire from today and play our style all day. If we do we will finish the season strong with more wins.

Effort was great all day. Unfortunately as has been the case all season we were not able to play our style of game all day. Our second quarter was excellent but again we failed to capitalise enough on our forward entries in the other three quarters. 5 goals is simply not enough to win games and certainly not enough for the forward entries we had. But we still have 5 games to go and a lot we can still get out of the season so rock up to training and lets prepare well and have another crack next Sunday v McLeod.

We failed to stick to our game plan for most of the day and as a result our performance was disappointing and we lost the game. When we were prepared to stick to our plan we looked good and opened them up but doing this for a quarter is not enough – it must be for four quarters. Only then will we get our next win.

Overall an improvement again from our last game. Even though we trailed badly at half time our effort in the first half was good. We just didn’t capitalised on our opportunities. Our second half was our best half of the season. Our work rate lifted. We started to spread and switch the ball more. As a result we were rewarded more on the scoreboard. We are definitely heading in the right direction and if we keep improving and continue to work hard, spread and switch a win will not be too far away.

A good effort today against the top side. Our attitude was great and we didn’t drop our heads at any stage. Even though we gave away an early lead we fought the game out right to the end. Our second half which has been an issue for us this season was really pleasing. We kicked 4.4 to 4.5. Now that we have set the benchmark for effort and attitude we can move forward to working on ball and player movement. This will help us get scoreboard reward for our effort and play.

Arthur Andionioff - 100 games
A fantastic team effort all day. We had contributions from everyone. Although far from a perfect performance, a really big improvement on the previous week. Our attack on the ball and the contest was great as it’s been all season so far. But what was really pleasing was our run both ways especially for the first three quarters and our switching of the play when the opportunity presented itself. We also used the ball better going forward which allowed us to turn more forward entries into scoring opportunities. We got tired a little towards the end of the game but fought hard to keep them out and win the game by a few goals. We should really use this week’s performance as a platform for the remainder of the season. Let’s continue to work on our run and spread in games especially for 4 quarters and our ball usage. As was shown especially for nearly three quarters, when we can get this right we are a handful but when it drops off we really come back to the pack. A special mention to Arthur who played his 100th game – an awesome effort. Arthur started in the ruck and got us going from the start. Make sure you all get to training during the week so we can continue to hone our game plan and skills. Well done.

Round 1 was a solid hit out. We need to work on our structures, to be disciplined and work on our game plan. We turned the ball over with poor disposal. I'm sure this will improve over coming weeks. Let's get to training this week and work hard.
