Dear Members,

Club News

On Monday 15th June both the U14 Black and U15.1 sides were lucky to enjoy a night at the Carlton FC. The boys (and parents) enjoyed an insight on how an AFL club operates with a special video review and analysis session with new coach John Barker. John was good enough give up his valuable time and explain to the boys how the club and players review and set up each game. From there the boys were all given a brand new Carlton jumper to keep and to wear for the night where they then enjoyed an hour training session with a group of senior players that included Matthew Kreuzer, Chris Yarran, David Ellard, Matthew Watson, Andreas Everitt and Captain Marc Murphy. After training the boys were then treated to enjoy dinner with the Carlton players and a chance to chat to them and get some autographs on their new Carlton jumpers. On behalf of the club and both coaches Jack Batchelor and Paul King and all the players and parents we would like to thank Gavin Donaldson (Zac U14 Black & Ryan U15.1) who through his role as General Manager of Hyundai arranged the night. Thanks Gavin for giving the St Marys boys a chance to enjoy this experience and I know all the parents that attended enjoyed it immensely. Thank you also to Sharyn Green (Joel U14 Black) for providing some photos which you can check out on our facebook page.

Anyone who was lucky enough to be at the club last Sunday night would have experienced a fantastic presentation from AFL Woman’s Ambassador and Western Bulldogs player, Steph Chiocci and Paralympian Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy. Both of these young women gave our members a great insight into their lives and challenges as women in elite sport and I would like to thank them for their efforts in giving up their time for our club. They managed to keep our members quiet for over 40 minutes, no small feat indeed, and a testament to their wonderful stories & presentation.

Last Sunday night we also announced that this year, and in future years, we will be honouring one of our top age youth girls with the Bernie Girolomi medal. Similar to the boys award, the Gerry O’Hara medal, this medal will be awarded to a girl who may or may not be not be best player, but shows the outstanding qualities of leadership, club involvement and commitment to the St Marys values. Congratulations to Bernie for the honour of having this award bearing his name, a well deserved recognition of his efforts at our club, and in the formation of our girls program in particular.

This week the President of the YJFL personally phoned all club presidents to express his dismay at the high number of incidents of misconduct experienced this year to date, not by players, but by club officials and adult spectators. I am extremely pleased to report that St Mary’s has not been the perpetrator of any of the incidents, but it serves as a timely reminder that we are involved in JUNIOR sport. Whilst we like to win, and sometimes incidents do arise that disappoint us, it is important to remember that our actions as adults have a huge influence on the behaviour of our kids. I would like to congratulate everyone on their conduct thus far and continue to encourage you to represent our club befitting the reputation of the great St Mayrs GJFC.

Team Photos this Sunday and next Wednesday, Please ensure you are at the clubrooms at least 15 min prior to your photo time. All players to be in full kit, black shorts and clean boots. Team officials to wear long pants and club polo or jacket.
