Grand Final - 26/8/2012
St Marys Under 13 Green- 2 .7 .19 vs. OWhitehorse Colts 4 .14 .38
Coaches' comments:
Wednesday; last training night before the big one; found out Tappers (Curtis) is in hospital with appendicitis. Big disappointment for Curtis and for the team; I mention this not as an excuse; rather, I rate Curtis very highly he hasn't missed a game and has huge impact in every game he plays. I'm sure and I hope he plays footy well into his adulthood; if he does he'll impact many finals along the way. Match day; arrived at ground my first concern was the size of the ground, it looked like a postage stamp, but I was assured it was the size of Greensborough park and slightly wider on the wings. I was hoping for a Bulleen 1 size ground which would have suited our running style. I''ve never seen or played on a ground quite like it; nevertheless we had to adjust to what we were given. I must admit it took me a while to work out the right formula; unlike Greensborough the ground had a peculiar shape with no pockets; we should have push the forward pockets out higher a lot earlier then we did. I'll cop that one! Boys seemed a little more nervous than 2nd semi but that was to be expected as it was the first Grand final for most of the boys A difficult game to coach it was a real tough hard fought contest from start to finish. Unlike the other games played this season against Whitehorse where they would cover a line with their bigs; this time they zoned their talls right around the ground and had the rest chase and tackle relentlessly for the entire game (buggers never gave us an inch). I view it as a sign of respect for they tagged and kept close check as many of our players had an opponent glued to them throughout the game, Jay wore two for most of the game(good learning curb for the boys). The boys showed a lot of heart and as I always say our boys have football smarts; in the case of sundays final we had a lot of players not so much down but lacking their usual clean ball handling; I believe this was the main issue, at crucial points in the game we just couldn't get it clean to hand to make an impact. as a consequence we were always chasing the game. Saying that, the heart and footy smarts kept us in the game till the very end 18 points down with 6 mins to go Isaac outpoints his opponent and coolly slots the goal; 12 points down 5 to go Isaac again on the half forward flack turns is tag inside out, beautiful 40m kick, gasp around the ground (apparently it was sailing through) last second, bang ball smacks into the top of the post, still remember the big sigh from the crowd, It was that momentum moment in the game if it had snuck through anything may have happened; you had the sense that it was game over, they kicked the sealer minutes later.
Goal Kickers:
Corey, Isaac
Best Players:
Isaac, Dempsey, Ethan, Hamish, Billy and Zac were clean of hand and i thought were outstanding in both the semi and GF The rest of the boys can all hold their heads up high for they fought it out to the very end, and now know they are hardened tough finals players. I am very impressed with the fight they showed as a group. They were all outstanding in the 2nd semi; highlights the great character of the team and of the players as individuals.
Encouragements:
Blake, Woody, Jacob and Jazz; these four boys were outstanding in both finals, each of them showed themselves and the crowd how good they can be, and should now possess the confidence to take the next step in their football development. keep going boys i can see great footballers emerging.
Announcements:
Overall we've had a great season with 13 wins (including four over 100 points) kicked over 1000 points for the season. Amazing improvements from all of the boys in particular Corey, Isaac, Matty, Zac, Jayden, Macca and Billy(going from last year these boys had dramatic leaps, sorry if I missed any other big mover, I believe every player has shown gradual improvement throughout the year) What we must take out of the experience is not the attitude on the day rather the attitude at training throughout the lenght of a season. Some of the boys wasted lots of time stuffing around; they/ you know who you are; whereas if you performed our training drills with GF intensity for most of the time, it would have served you better on individual performance and I believe the team would have also benefitted on GF day. Not a criticism just some advice to point you toward future GF success. Success that I have no doubt this group of boys can deliver if they put their mind and heart to the task. Thanks for a great season

Forty two scoring shots should tell the story, not be the focus. The boys played a very disciplined game for four quarters which lead to setting up some fantastic team play and super team goals. The boys really are starting to know the pressure and running team game. Stay focused for next weeks big game.

Disappointed. We shirked at the contest. I thought we had our chance to make some ground on team above us. Gained momentum a few times and let it go to waste withloose defending. Concentration to play out whole game is a concern, needs to be addressed.

Again after a slow start a very pleasing finish. three quarters of fantastic football, As I mentioned at half time, it is a case of self belief, the boys need to know how good they actually aer. they started the game very timid so when the switch flicked we have a very good, hard running, talented football team.
