This week, St Mary’s will be supporting the AFL’s Indigenous Round where we recognise and celebrate the Indigenous players and their culture that make this game so great.  You will hear many words this weekend, such as Respect and Diversity – words that this club has been built upon.

This weekend, as part of our Indigenous Round Celebrations, we are asking all coaches to award the Anne-Marie Halewood Medal to one player in their team.

For those who are not aware, Anne-Marie was a long-term Team Manager, as well as our Registration Director, in 2014 and 2015.  Anne-Marie had a passion for promoting diversity through sport and in giving all kids, despite their cultural background or financial circumstances, the opportunity to play team sport, particularly football at St Mary’s GJFC.   She was the inspiration and organisation behind our inaugural Indigenous Round.  The Committee is proud to honour her legacy, by awarding this medal in her name.   The awarding of the medal is at the coach’s discretion.  However, in keeping with Anne-Marie’s contribution to our club, the qualities we want to award are:

  • Outstanding Effort.
  • Outstanding Teamwork.
  • Fair Play and Respect for the Umpires and Officials.
  • Selflessness.

As such, this is not a best on ground award. We are very proud that her family are still very actively involved within the club.  Ian is a passionate supporter of the club and is always willing to give his time to help, whenever needed.  Their two sons, Jake and Ben (Colts 1 and Under 15 (3) respectively), always ‘run out’ and make St Mary’s GJFC proud every Sunday.

This Sunday Night the club will be open to EVERYONE.

We would like all winners of the Anne-Marie Halewood medal and their families to be in attendance, as the medals will be presented to the winners in front of the entire Club.   We encourage all members to come back to the club to support this event. As usual, pizzas will be available for all players and a meal for others at a reasonable cost.

Lastly, don’t forget Photo Day this Sunday – please be at the Club at least 15 minutes prior, so all sides can get to their game on time – WE WILL NOT BE WAITING FOR LATE COMERS.

See you all Sunday.
